WebNov 7, 2024 · Put one of the nuts on the stud sticking out if the cylinder head. Hold the hammer at a right angle to the stud. Hold the hammer anvil on the flat of the nut. It can be lose on the bolt. Your just using it to protect the threads. Hammer in all the different ways you can around the stud in a circle. Here's a 7/16-14 x 7/16-20 x 3.00 stud, Grade 8, from SUMMIT RACING. It was the first place I looked so there may be others like allensfasteners. Note length is 3".

If you use a bolt or stud that is too long, it will crack the engine block when it bottoms out in the drilled hole, or if the unthreaded portion of the shank jams.

Note length is 3". Torque values will be different on studs with nuts than on the later hex head bolts. Nuts on studs are 7/16-20, hex head bolts are 7/16-14. That allows you to put a wrench on the nut and it heats up the broken stud in its hole causing it to loosen. A wire feed welder is best for that.
